Description
On Friday, February 19,
and Saturday, February 20, the Edmonton Auroras will host national
stream athletes as they compete in the provincials competition at
the Kinsmen Sport Centre. Plus on Sunday morning, February 21, the
figure competition for the Alberta Winter Games team trials take
place.
(The start date for this
website "event" is set to February 17 to allow for sign-up of
pre-event tasks.)
All competitions take
place in the dive tank at the Kinsmen Sports centre.
Under documents below you
can see the final schedule.
Basically, on Friday
afternoon there's spacing, following by duets and combos and a team
land drill competition, wrapping up at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday morning the
figures competitions takes place, followed by a flexibility
competition. In the afternoon on Saturday there will be solos and
team events, finishing up at 7:15 p.m.
Volunteers
needed
Aurora Synchro is hosting
this event, so we need volunteers. Below is a description of some
of the volunteer tasks. Click on

Volunteers, please wear
white tops and light-coloured pants or shorts.
Host club meet volunteer
positions
Hospitality
This person is responsible
for all hospitality provided at the meet. Judges usually get coffee
and juice with baked goods and fresh fruit or a light lunch,
depending on the length of the meet. Additional people could be
responsible for setting up refreshments for the volunteers. The
trays of food should be replenished often. It will be very
important to know how many people you will be providing hospitality
for during the meet.
Judges (Technical)
-- organized by Synchro Alberta, so no club signup required
Judge all events, both figures
and routines, in which they have no conflict of interest. Five
judges per panel for figures and 10 judges (five technical and five
artistic) for routines are required for all meets. Please refer to
judges panel procedures for complete explanation of the different
level of judges and how to obtain judges for your meet.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t

• Routine chits
• Clipboards and paper for routines
• Chairs for routine events, elevated chairs for
figures
• Pencils
• Flashcards from Synchro Alberta (rental cost for
Invitationals)
Meet Manager --
Lucille Lavender
The meet manager is
responsible for the overall operations of the competition and is in
charge until the arrival of the chief referee. He/she obtains the
necessary volunteers, finds out the names of the jury of appeal
from the judges chair, communicates figure groups and orders of
swim 18 to 72 hours prior to meet, and makes sure all the clubs and
Synchro Alberta have a complete set of results following the meet.
The meet manager does all the arrangements prior to the meet. This
person should be very organized and calm under pressure.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t

• Masking tape
• Scissors and ruler
• Synchro Alberta and Synchro Canada rulebook
• Pencils and erasers
• Awards
• Paper and markers
• Figure markers
• Tables and chairs for all officials
• Sound system
• FINA book

Pre-Swimmers
Note: All pre-swimmers must
be registered competitive members and should be at a comparable
swimming level for that which they are pre-swimming. Pre-swimmers
are required to register for the meet. See the registration form in
Appendix E.
Promotions Chair
Promotes the meet and is
responsible for the program, if applicable.
Volunteers for routine
portion of events
Announcer
Announces events and reads
scores for routines. Also announces each routine as they are swum.
Sample announcer’s scripts are provided in Appendix J and K
of the meet manager’s handbook. For Synchro Alberta sponsored
meets an announcer’s script will be provided by the scoring
person.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t
have these items, please ask):
• Microphone
• Pencil and eraser
• Program of events
• List of full names of competitors, clubs, and coaches
for announcing
• Chair and table
• List of all officials: judges, technical monitors,
chief referee, and jury of appeal
Chief Referee
(Technical)
Chief referee presents
competitors in routines and blows a whistle for the music to begin.
This referee is the controlling official at the meet. He/she makes
decisions and sets rules for the efficient officiating of the meet
and can make rulings on a major decision or any discrepancies.
Starts and ends the competition. A chief and an assistant referee
are needed for the figures and the routine meets. For Synchro
Alberta sponsored meets the chief referee will be assigned by the
judges chair; for all other meets it is the responsibility of the
meet. If it is the latter, get a list from the judges chair of
possible qualified referees.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t
have these items, please ask):
• Clipboard and list of order of competitors in each
event
• Whistle
• Lists of figures and routines to be performed and in
what order
• A chair
• Final judging schedule
Referee Assistant
(Technical)
Rounds up competitors
before events to ensure all competitors are present. He/shemakes
sure the referee is aware of where the competitors are prior to
events.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t
have these items, please ask):
• Clipboard
• Order of events and order of swimmers (the
“draw”)
Music Manager
Plays the music for the
practice and for the competition. He/she is totally responsible for
all of the tapes/CDs until the end of the meet and must have two
copies of each tape/CD (a practice and a competition tape)
presented during the club practice time and not returned until
after the competition. The tapes/CDs should be indexed with small
self-adhesive labels for organization purposes. The music manager
will adjust the volume of the music if a coach so requests;
however, only the chief referee has the right to stop the music (at
the coach’s request). The music manager should be fairly
knowledgeable with the music system and how it works. Only the
music manager is allowed to play the music. The tapes must be
presented to the music manager prior to the competition with clear
identification, including the swimmer’s name(s), club name,
type of routine, age group, and coach’s name.

• Case for tapes/CDs
• Music sign in and out sheet
• Order of competitors and events
Note: An assistant music manager is recommended for larger meets
and would assist the music manager where
needed.
Runners
Are used in routines to
take the judges score chits to the scorers’ table after the
routine is swum. The scorers then hand the chits to the announcer
to be read out loud. The chits are then taken to the scorer table
to be recorded.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t
have these items, please ask):
• Chairs to sit on
Note: runners are usually swimmers or siblings who are not
competing.
Technical Monitors
(Technical)-- organized by
Synchro Alberta, so no club signup required
Monitors all routines to ensure that
technical elements as listed in the rule book are included, in
order, for each routine. Conflict of interest rules do not apply;
in other words, you can be a technical monitor for a routine event
that your child is participating in. Technical monitors must attend
judges’ meetings prior to the event to review elements. The
technical monitor must be qualified at the level they are
monitoring. Generally, at provincial-level meets technical monitors
are level 1 judges.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t
have these items, please ask):
• Technical monitor sheets (provided by chief
referee)
• Clipboards
• Flags
• Chairs
Timers
Times all routines with a
stopwatch. They time the walkout, deck work, and routine based on
set parameters defined in the Synchro Canada and FINA rulebooks. A
penalty is given if the time is under or over the maximum for the
routine, so the referee must be notified immediately if this
applies.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t
have these items, please ask):
• Four stop watches
• Paper, pencils, and erasers
• Routine time sheet (from Appendix I of the meet
manager’s handbook)
Videographer
Videotape all routines so
that tapes can be reviewed should technical monitors have
questions. A flashcard should be used so that the videographer can
put the competitor number in front of the camera prior to each
swim. For Synchro Alberta sponsored meets a video camera is
available for use at no charge.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t

• Video camera

Volunteers for figures
portion of events
Computer Scoring
Person (preferably has been
trained on the program being used)
Enters all the competitors into the scoring system prior to the
meet. This person enters all the results and gives them to the meet
manager for photocopying, posting, and club envelopes (or other
designated volunteer). For Synchro Alberta sponsored meets a
computer scoring person will be assigned by Synchro Alberta.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t
have these items, please ask):
• Laptop computer
• Printer
• Lots of paper
• A chair
• Whiteout
• Results forms
• Photocopier
Panel Referee(s)
(Technical)
Calls out figures scores.
This person should be able to identify the figures being swum and
confer with the judges. This individual must initial penalties on
score sheets. Referees should join the judges when they review the
figures in the judges’ room.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t
have these items, please ask):
• Clipboard - Order of competitors in each event
• Lists of figures to be performed and in what order
• Chairs
Panel Referee
Assistant
Locate and arrange
competitors in order of draw sheets for each figure. Send
competitors out for judging at appropriate place and time to
facilitate the smooth, on-schedule running of figure events.
They should be provided with the following (if you don’t
have these items, please ask):
• Clipboard (with order of swimmers)
• List of figures to be swum and in what order
• A chair
Scorer
This person records the
figure marks as read by the panel referee. The computer scoring
person will retrieve the score sheets. There are three score
persons per panel.

• One table per panel

• Calculator
• Highlighters
• Figures graph sheets (from Appendix G and H of the
