Canada wins FINA trophy

Canada was the champion of the 4th FINA World Trophy competition, held in Montreal on November 27 to 29, 2009, amongst the 10 best countries in the world. During the weekend Canada took first in three events: highlight team, thematic duet, and thematic team. The Canadian team got perfect marks for the first time since the 1997 FINA World Cup, earning two marks of 10 for the thematic team routine.

The FINA World Trophy is the most spectacular event on the international synchronized swimming calendar.  Held annually, recent host cities have included Madrid, Moscow, and Rio de Janeiro.  The 4th FINA World Trophy attracted 120 athletes from the top-10 nations in synchronized swimming: Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, Spain, United States, Italy, Japan, and Russia.  During the event judge’s scores are based almost entirely on the artistic merit of the routines, which allows complete freedom for costumes and surprise accessories.

Some of the events from the 4th FINA World Trophy in Montreal are expected to be televised in Canada on Saturday, December 12. Otherwise, you can view routines on YouTube by searching for 4th FINA World Trophy 2009.
