Auroras’ volunteering commitment for 2010-11

(Please see the list of current volunteer opportunities on the September 1 Volunteering event.)

The Edmonton Aurora Synchronized Swim Club has a history of great volunteers. We rely on the time our members give to operate the club smoothly. In order to maintain this level of excellence, all Aurora families with swimmers in the Wildrose or National streams must fulfill required participation hours within the synchro year, from September to August. (Without written consent from the president, volunteer time worked does not carry back to a previous year or forward to the next year.)

Volunteering is required for National and Wildrose streams but not for recreational participants (AquaSquirts and FUNdamentals).

Here's how many hours we require for each category of swimmer.
You can meet this quota through any combination of mandatory and optional volunteering.

  • Wildrose 10&U -- 15 volunteer hours per year
  • Wildrose 12&U -- 20 volunteer hours per year
  • Wildrose 13-15 -- 20 volunteer hours per year
  • Wildrose 15+ -- 20 volunteer hours per year
  • National 13-15 -- 30 volunteer hours per year
  • National Jr -- 30 volunteer hours per year
  • National Sr -- 30 volunteer hours per year

Mandatory volunteering:

  • Casinos: If we host a casino, each family must work two casino shifts. Besides, casinos are kind of fun. We anticipate our next casino in the summer of 2012. We'll find out the date in February 2012.
  • Competitions: For each competition that we host (and we always host a competition or two), each family is asked to work at least five hours at the meet. In fact, we need a lot more help from our members, so we expect that people who aren't volunteering in other ways (as listed on the volunteering event for the year), will volunteer 10 to 15 hours towards a meet. You know, meets are kind of fun, too. Typically, competitions occur in January to April. Check the Events list to see when we're hosting meets. Click here for a description of volunteer positions at competitions.
You can also receive credit for helping out at a competition hosted by another club, but it may not appear on the Events list or may not have a signup button. Please contact the president to ask that it be added so you can sign up.
  • Attending general meetings: To keep you in the loop, we have two general meetings each year, one in the spring and one in the fall. Attendance counts toward your volunteering quota, and they're a great way to stay informed.

Optional volunteering:

  • Operations
On the volunteering event for the year starting September 1 is a list of volunteer tasks that are integral to the effective operation of the club. To sign up, click the Job Sign Up button to indicate that you have performed or will perform a task.

A volunteer deposit (an undated cheque) for $150 is required for each Wildrose stream swimmer; a volunteer deposit of $300 is required for each National stream swimmer. It will be returned at the end of the year upon fulfillment of the volunteer commitments as outlined in section 7.5 of the parent handbook known as "red book".

Starting September 2010 Aurora Synchro volunteering tasks are integrated into events. To sign up for an event, scroll down the entries under the Events tab and select:

  1. a competition that Aurora Synchro is hosting or
  2. the Volunteer opportunities event, September 1 to August 31, to sign up for an operational task.
